"The Milwaukee County Zoo is considered one of the top zoos in the nation regarding its collection - whether it's African elephants or Siberian tigers, there's something for everyone to enjoy," says Jennifer Diliberti, public relations coordinator. "It is a great stop for tourists."ATMOSPHERE
The zoo opened in 1892 before moving to its Blue Mound Road location in the mid 1900s, where it has been located ever since. The beautiful location is one of the most attractive spots in all of Milwaukee. Whether you want to spend a nice sunny day with your family outside checking out the various types of animals within the zoo’s confines, or you just want to stroll through alone, people watching, as many seem to do, a day at Milwaukee County Zoo is promised to be a great experience.
"The Milwaukee County Zoo offers a unique park-like setting to view more than 2,000 different animals representing more than 300 species," Diliberti says. "Situated on more than 200 acres, many exhibits display predator and prey species, like they would be found in the wild, separated only by a hidden moat. This has proven very popular with our visitors!"
With so many options - koala, western lowland gorilla, African elephant, vampire bat, orangutan, Chinese Alligator, king penguin, red panda, leopard shark, and the Pacific giant Octopus, just to name a few, visitors will be sure to find something to peek their interest. Just because she is the public relations coordinator doesn’t mean Diliberti cannot have her personal favorites as well.
"My favorite exhibits are those which show the predator/prey design, such as African lion overlooking waterbuck and zebra; and the cheetahs overlooking impalas," Diliberti says. "It makes you feel like you are on a real safari adventure."
When you get hungry, don’t fret, because the zoo has it’s own restaurant, The Flamingo Lake Café, an establishment that offers all your favorite types of food.
All in all, the atmosphere is perfect, with the nature, the bird sounds, the food, the people, everything!
CROWD
Most zoos are featured toward the family. The idea that families will join together for a fantastic day on the grounds is a long cherished tradition at almost every zoo. Milwaukee County is no different. If you are there on a school day, expect to see even more kids than usual, but on weekends, it is definitely a family hangout. For you single people out there, there are many beautiful men and woman walking the grounds, so it could be a perfect place to snag up a future date as well.
EVENTS
One of the main events for the summer will be the Return to Dinosaur Island, an event that will give visitors the chance to turn back the clock to when Dinosaurs ruled the world. If you have seen Jurassic Park, then you will have somewhat of an idea of what this event will look like. This is an event definitely worth checking out if you live in Milwaukee and haven’t been to the zoo in some time, or if you are a visitor looking for a daytime activity.
June 5 - September 6
Northwestern Mutual Foundation Presents Return to Dinosaur Island
Take a trip back 150 million years in the past to a tropical island kingdom! Stroll past 25 life-size robotic dinosaurs, moving and rumbling in their outdoor prehistoric world! Learn what the word dinosaur means, why some dinosaurs had such long necks and which zoo animals are most closely related to dinosaurs. (Information provided by Diliberti)
PRICES
The zoo has to maintain its beauty, so with that comes the price - $9 for adults, $6 for juniors. Be sure to budget the $7 parking, unless you park outside of the grounds. With over a million people visiting each year, that price should work just fine in keeping the park as clean and comfortable.
