We know we aren’t the only ones rabidly penning letters to the head honchos at Fox in order to save “Arrested Development.” Its absurd and critically acclaimed brand of black humor lights up our Sunday nights in the way “The Simpsons” did in the halcyon days of the mid-'90s. Alongside the multitude of accomplished adult actors on A.D. are two young stars who just may be the future of comic Hollywood – if only we'll let them.
Canadian native Michael Cera, probably best recognized previously for his blink-and-you’ll-miss-it role in the 2000 film “Frequency,” has perfect deadpan timing as the adorably clueless George Michael Bluth. Whether wearing a headgear and brandishing a broom "Star Wars"-style or lusting after his cousin Maeby, Cera plays the banana-selling geek with all the honesty, confusion, and hormones that we remember from our own early teen years. (We’re so over you and your hyperawareness, Seth Cohen.) Cera makes being nerdy so cool that he makes me wish I were sixteen again, just so my crush on him could be legal.
Californian Alia Shawkat, who was seen opposite George Clooney in the film “Three Kings,” plays the jaded Maeby. Her world-weary demeanor makes her seem older than fifteen (maybe that’s why she’s been seen posing as a studio executive), and that’s a part of Maeby’s charm. In a way, we’re almost rooting for George Michael to win her in the end.
If Shawkat and Cera can make incest seem cool, there’s no role they can’t conquer.
It’s a rare case that teens on TV are actually played by teens, but Arrested Development’s young actors are pitch perfect with scads of talent often missing in their elder WB counterparts. While their peers suffer in the “Spring Break Shark Attacks” of the world, these talented kids grabbed two of the coolest parts out there. It would be coolest of all if they got to keep playing them a while longer. |
