Angelina? Cool? Two words: eye patch. No, the discussion doesn’t end there, but Jolie’s appearance as a leather-jacketed (and eye-patched) flying ace in last summer’s “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow” evoked a transcendent cool, one that crosses generations, genres, and genders.
She’s played both modern and historical characters, utilized various accents and hair colors, and won an Oscar for playing a tortured free spirit. Transcendent cool.
Jolie is also second generation Hollywood and came into the public eye around the same time her father (Jon Voight) began reaching a new, younger audience as a heavy. She’s very close to her brother Jamie and has tattoos marking various chapters in her life. Her marriage to (and exchange of blood vials with)Billy Bob Thornton got a lot of publicity, serving mostly to enhance her allure, so that now, Billy Bob-free, she regularly makes Sexiest People lists, Beautiful People lists, Powerful People lists and, yeah, Coolest People lists. (Her recent links to Brad Pitt haven't hurt either.)
She has a cult film on her resume (Hackers), and she did her own stunts for the blockbuster Lara Croft movies – showing she is not only beautiful and complex, but tough, too. She further fosters this image by employing no agent or publicist and managing her own career. Savvy. Career cool.
Wanting to see the troubles of the world’s refugees first hand, Jolie visited enough impoverished countries to earn a Goodwill Ambassador appointment from the United Nations. Her adopted son, Maddox, was born in Cambodia. Mix that fact with her own Czechoslovakian, English, and Native American heritage, and you get Cosmopolitan cool. |
