20. Matt Damon, 34 Print E-mail

Matt Damon is cool because he broke through as a writer first (with an Oscar win for “Good Will Hunting”), then got starring movie roles while also playing a few supporting parts. But mostly, Matt Damon is cool because he is not Ben Affleck.

Back in 1997, “Good Will Hunting” showcased two dynamic young actors and it seemed like the sky was the limit for both of them. Damon, the more withdrawn of the two, followed up with “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” and it looked like Hollywood had a new great star.

But the actor took more time choosing projects than his partner did, to the point where critics felt he had missed his moment. So much so that his role as Jason Bourne in 2002’s “The Bourne Supremacy” was considered a comeback. The dude is still only 34, but his screen age is much younger, indicating that he could, if he wanted to, carry this “hot, intelligent stud” thing for many more years. And with the two “Bourne” movies, he’s now a bankable action star.

Also cool is that Damon managed to land a significant role in support of box office heavyweights George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Julia Roberts in 2001’s “Ocean’s 11” and its 2004 follow up “Ocean’s 12.” Stealing scenes from big stars increases his cool factor, so does doing voiceovers in cult animation flicks like “Titan A.E.”
