For people who haven't seen Charlie Sexton and his band play live, you're missing out. Don't worry though; if you can access the Lone Star State in early 2006, there's an intimate performance at Dallas' Bend Studio on January 7.

Charlie's genre is a mix of Rock/Folk Rock/Acoustic styles. There's something for everyone and nothing offensive. This is music you can listen to. Recently, Sexton and his band played Chicago's Double Door in October to support his first solo release in 10 years, “Cruel And Gentle Things.” The room was packed and the sound was heaven, interspersed with a jam-like feel. The banter between Charlie and the crowd was fueled by the endearment behind it. Although it's a small venue, the guys made the performance feel like they were playing to a Dave Matthews sized-crowd. Not so much sonically, but emotionally and energetically.
Over the Thanksgiving holiday, Charlie Sexton, joined now on the last leg of the tour by Shannon McNally, came out to play to a packed crowd for their final show of 2005. As the curtain rises in the Granada Theater, Charlie eloquently announces Shannon to the stage, revealing to the audience that he and his entire band are playing double duty. Vocally, she's reminiscent of Janice Joplin and Stevie Nicks combined; a perfect accompaniment are Charlie's backing vocals.
After a short break, everyone is back for the Sexton portion of the evening. This is a long working night for the guys, but the crowd never knows it. His band members Carter Albrecht, Billy Cassis, J.J. Johnson, George Reiff are each notable musicians in their own rights, making this lineup a surprisingly understated super-group of professionals.
Onstage, everyone looks like they're having the time of their lives. They're fun to watch as the melodies roll out into the cheering crowd. Now and again, Shannon pops out to provide some additional vocals/guitar to enhance the power of the performance. When the show comes to a close, the audience obviously wants more. Stomping and chanting until everyone comes back to deliver a vibrant encore of classic rock staples: Tom Petty's “American Girl” and Fleetwood Mac's “Go Your Own Way”. It was served up like the cherry on top, and much like a sundae, you're sad to find it's over. Powered by AkoComment 2.0! |
