Apple is on the road in support of her current release “Extraordinary Machine,” and is excited to showcase material from her previous two releases “Tidal” and “When the Pawn….” This is in the midst of rumors running rampant about the insidious reasons that her current release wasn't being released. Apple has maintained all along, though, that such responsibility lies squarely with her. "The actual reason it didn't come out is that I wasn't satisfied with the way it was," she says. "I felt really bad because I wasn't really there to captain the ship.” This was due, in part, by someone leaking a rough version of the release to the internet. She equates it to someone stealing her diary and reading it before the whole class. Sometimes people close to you can the worst betrayers; you begin to doubt everyone’s loyalty.
With her current release Apple continues with her esoteric lyrics which convey a myriad of betrayals (personal and professional) that would make anyone consider giving up and choosing a different line of work. No one’s loyalty was questioned when she was greeted with countless accolades and praise thought-out the show. The audience was glad to see her; we missed you Ms. Apple!
She presented a heartfelt show, pounding the keys of her piano like a lover. Apple’s sharp tongued sultry voice yelled hearsay all over the place. At times she seemed possessed by the soul of Joe Cocker channeling the Blues of Bessie Smith. Apple was a singing tantrum backed by a sure footed band, which included her brother. But as everyone knows all angst and no play makes Apple a sullen girl.
At one point a stuffed pooch was tossed upon the stage, to which she giggled and proceeded to sing a song to it, as well as the audience. She continued to giggle at the applause and took time to put all of her trials into perspective. “I’ve had some bad days recently…and how I really hate people sometimes…but I want to thank you all for curing me of that.”
Then, getting back into the angst of things she said, still giggling, “I wrote this song with the intent of leaving this person…and I eventually did; three years later” in performing the song “Get Gone” Other angst ridden songs included new tracks “Red, Red, Red” (which is significantly different than the original leaked version) and “Not about Love.”
For the encore she skipped giddily back to the stage to perform the Cole Porter like “Extraordinary Machine” With all of her dark and murky lyrics and minor key playing it was refreshing to see her, in some way, poke fun at her musical life. What this song brings to life is that you have to have a sense of humor in the midst of dark things. She then followed it up with an accusative version of “Criminal.”
Apple holds nothing back in her performance; so don’t miss it. You never know what you are about experience with her. Just like the infamous acceptance speech at an awards ceremony when she said “This world is bullshit” and then citing one of her inspirations Maya Angelou and quoted: "Go with yourself." Go to the show; take yourself and maybe an ex, it should prove to be an interesting evening.
