As Opeth shows go, I’ve come to expect near perfection and tonight would be no exception. For this was no ordinary show; this was one of three very special shows held only in New York, L.A., and our very own House of Blues in Chicago.

Billed as "Chronology MCMXCIV-MMV", the format was to start with the very first album and continue to their most recent along with some tunes that either, were never played live before, or never played live in the U.S.

Starting off with some introductory classics from "Orchid" and "Morningrise", these masterpieces, although sounding incredible, also sounded very different. Vocalist Mikael Akerfeldt and the band always finding ways to improve themselves have brought back the keyboardist from the “Damnation” tour, Per Wiberg. In turn, creating a sound that melds together smoothly that one could say was meant to be there all along.

After a bit of self-proclaimed ala VH-1 StoryTellers, due to a very "rare" hangover, we moved on to "Amen Corner" off their third release 1998’s, "My Arms, Your Hearse". Any real Opeth fan can appreciate this one while dropping their jaw at what was to come. "White Cluster" off the "Still life” album, clearly a favorite was executed to perfection, including the demanding and perfect jam at the end that soars to an incredible furry then plunges to the quiet pain of forgiveness.

With every pause between songs included the typical rants and raves from a very vocal crowd, who were faithfully packed into the House of Blues buried body to body and could be seen all the way to the back at the coat check!

With another couple of blistering tracks off the "Blackwater Park" and "Deliverance" albums, they slowed it down a bit with the opener off 2003’s "Damnation". "Windowpane" brought out the elegance and grace and created a delicate balance amongst the madness. Its soothing vocals and almost hypnotic rhythm were delivered by Mikael Akerfeldt perfectly.

Like a good kick in the teeth, Opeth quickly came roaring back with a slew of tracks off of 2005’s, “Ghost Reveries”. This being their latest collection of tunes proved to not disappoint. All I can say is, like an ending to a movie you haven't seen yet, you'll thank me later for not spoiling it. Truly “Ghost Reveries is a masterpiece and has proven to be a hit all over with awards and best's of the year in many magazines and online reviews. It’s a huge wake up call to all of us in the metal world! So go, go now, drop what you’re doing and buy tickets to an Opeth show near you. Believe me when I say you won't regret it!
