The Yeah Yeah Yeah’s have recently, as of March 28th, released their second album entitled “Show Your Bones,” an 11 track work of two to four minute songs.

Where singer Karen O’s piercing vocals worked semi-well on their first album, “Fever To Tell,” in this more down-tempo compilation they, to me, seem more lost than anything. Her lack of cohesive melodies along with her “if I think I can, I can” attitude about singing make most of the CD sound like one long movie background soundtrack that makes me cringe in the most appropriate places.

I appreciated, however, a lot of the guitar and keyboard work. The instruments blended together to make an eerie, ethereal sound for most of the songs that drew me into listening further.

I found a lot of the lyrics to be overly repetitive and senseless. Well, aren’t most lyrics senseless? Many times, yes. But for some reason these really got to me. The song “Cheated Hearts” is the worst offender, with lines like “I’m taka-taka-taka-taka-takin’ it off and she’s taka-taka-taka-taka-takin’ it off and he’s…” etc. etc. etc. etc. In the same track we’re also treated to “I think I’m bigger than the sound, I think I’m bigger than the sound, I think I’m bigger than the sound…” over and over. There are a lot of bands that can pull off this repetitive lyric singing but I just don’t think the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s fall into that category.

To be fair, though, I did enjoy “Mysteries,” a very high-tempo and energetic song, and the last track “Turn Into,” which had the most cohesive melodies and is the strongest single of the album. Overall, I think the music of the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s is an acquired taste and I don’t have enough time in my life to want to bother acquiring it.
