Exploring the word “cool” is made easy when you’re packing a Merriam-Webster Dictionary.cool adj : slang very good, unflappable, composed, collected, unruffled, nonchalant.
Thanks to that definition, I can proudly proclaim myself as No. 36 on Lumino Magazine’s 35 and younger list. And that proclamation really needs no backing since I am, indeed, the publisher.
Wait, that last statement would probably fall under “self-absorbed.”
I wasn’t always cool. When I was in the second grade I wore snow boots, sweatpants and a Jim McMahon jersey. I was also a little on the chubby side, so that didn’t make me any cooler.
But after finally perfecting the “Truffle Shuffle” (no, I can’t do it anymore) suddenly, kids starting liking me. I was the cool fat kid. I had friends. When I had a birthday party, everyone wanted to be invited.
That was before the sixth grade, when girls starting liking boys. There were no more cooties, and unfortunately I was left in the cold to die. This trend continued through junior high. I tried buying some name brand clothes to become cool again, but Gap just wasn’t popular yet. If you didn’t have a Starter hat and jacket you were not cool.
Nick Powills – still not cool.
Then came high school. I had bouts with coolness freshman and sophomore
years, but never could lift myself over the hump. I was trapped between the
nerds and the losers. NOT a good place to be.
Come junior year, the weight started to shed, and Tommy Hilfiger started filling my wardrobe. I was set. Soon, I got my first girlfriend, and from there the red carpet was rolled out for me.
I was officially cool. I joined a fraternity. I made some great college friends. I turned into the leader of the pack again. AND it felt great. So, now after a whirlwind of being cool and not being cool, I am officially cool.
I have the clothes, the ride, the attitude, the looks, and the style to be cool. I have even signed an autograph or two. But getting to this level was not easy. It took persistence and concentration, but all that hard work paid off. And, lucky for you who are still trapped between nerd and loser, there is hope for you. If Nick Powills, No. 36 on Lumino’s coolest list, can do it. So can you.
Go get ‘em slugger. I believe in you!
