03. Scarlett Johansson, 21 Print E-mail

Ever since Scarlett Johansson snatched our heart from then-indie-darling Thora Birch's clutches in "Ghost World" we've been mesmerized by her husky voice and impressive curves. In a world of flash-in-the-pan ingénues, Johansson has embraced old Hollywood style, imbuing her with an ageless brand of poise and grace that belies the fact that she's just old enough to drink.

"Ghost World" may have brought her into the public eye, but it was 2003's "Lost in Translation" that really made Johansson cool. Alongside icon of cool Bill Murray, Johansson (and a pair of pale pink underpants) helped make a dreamy sleeper of a movie about an unexpected May-December relationship worth watching. Johansson even managed to accomplish the near-impossible and made singing karaoke seem charming.

But it's not her voluptuous beauty or formidable acting talent that make Scarlett Johansson worth including on this list. There's something mesmerizing about this young actress' old soul, something that escapes definition yet screams "cool!" at the same time. It wouldn't seem out of place to stroll down the street and see Johansson taking a late lunch with Greta Garbo or Rita Hayworth, then later find her chain smoking in the corner of a coffee shop at a poetry reading. She's like the vaguely unreachable but alluringly deep girl from high school or college – we might never know how to approach her for a conversation, but we love watching her from afar.
